The Beginning of Something New they Didn't Ask for

Dear Friends,

It is hard to start something new, because you have to give up something before the new thing can begin. And the reality is that we like what we know much more than what might be, even if the “what might be” might be better or necessary. I am learning this lesson daily as I talk with other pastors and church leaders and consider what the future might hold. I really don’t want to let go of the way things were. It was comfortable. It worked. But here we are at the beginning of something new that none of us asked for. Isn’t this is the story of the disciples as they experienced the Risen Christ, “the beginning of something new they didn’t ask for”? Somehow they found new life and built a new community of faith, hope, and love.

Where are you experiencing new community?

Where are you seeing new life?

What do you hope to see when we are able to be together again?

I know that we will be together again. It might not be exactly the way it used to be, but it will be good. So be patient and take care of yourself. I love you and miss you. And if you need to talk, please give me call. I’d love to hear from you.

All loving Creator, whose care for us is unfailing, use us to show others how you can bring good from evil and joy from suffering.  May our faith in the coming resurrection give us the compassion and courage we need to bring Christ’s love to the world. Be with those who are sick, isolated, or fearful. Strengthen them with your love.  Amen
